For Japan, compare Airalo, Saily and ESIM0 by the allowance you actually need and what happens after it is used. ESIM0 offers fixed data bundles and daily allowances that continue at a reduced speed; the other providers have their own package and app options. There is no single winner for every trip.
Editorial disclosure: this comparison is written by the ESIM0 team, which sells travel eSIMs. We checked the providers’ official product pages on 8 October 2026. This is a comparison of published terms, not a field test or an independent ranking. Product selections and terms can change.
Japan eSIM options at a glance
| Provider | Published Japan options | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Airalo | Fixed-data and unlimited selections; top-ups on eligible packages. | Read the exact package’s validity, fair-use terms and top-up availability. |
| Saily | Fixed bundles from 1–20 GB; its 15-day unlimited option lists 5 GB/day, then up to 1 Mbps. | Daily high-speed allowance, optional calls/text extras and app management. |
| ESIM0 | Fixed bundles from 1–50 GB; daily 1, 2 or 3 GB allowances, then 1 Mbps. | Choose total data or daily data, and match validity to your itinerary. |
Where the providers differ
Airalo’s Japan page offers an app for buying and managing packages and lists SoftBank among its networks. It says many packages can be topped up, but availability depends on the package. Choose it on the strength of the specific package and workflow you want, rather than assuming every Airalo eSIM has the same features.
Saily lists KDDI and SoftBank, hotspot sharing and app top-ups. Its Japan page also offers phone-number, minutes and text-message extras; these should not be confused with the base data purchase. Its published 5 GB daily high-speed allowance may suit someone whose usage regularly exceeds a smaller daily allowance.
At the time of writing, ESIM0 Japan plans include a 1 GB/7-day fixed option, 3 GB with 15- or 30-day validity, and larger fixed bundles. A 50 GB/180-day option is also listed. Daily plans provide 1, 2 or 3 GB of high-speed data per day and continue at 1 Mbps after that daily allowance is used. These are data-only plans: no Japanese number, traditional calls or SMS are included.
Choose for your itinerary
For a short city trip, a fixed bundle can be easier to budget: you have one total allowance to spread across maps, bookings and messages. Estimate usage from your phone’s own mobile-data history instead of relying on a universal “GB per day” estimate. Download offline maps and entertainment before leaving Wi-Fi.
For a longer trip with similar usage each day, compare daily plans. A 3 GB daily allowance is not a single 3 GB pool for the whole trip. Conversely, a 10 GB fixed bundle does not replenish each morning. A larger daily high-speed allowance can matter more than the label used to market the plan.
If you need a local number, confirm the number’s country and the exact incoming/outgoing call and SMS capabilities before paying. Data for WhatsApp or FaceTime does not itself supply a mobile telephone number. ESIM0 is suitable when you want travel data while keeping your existing messaging account.
Before you pay
- Check your exact phone model and that it is unlocked. Use our compatibility guide before ordering.
- Match the destination, trip length and high-speed allowance. A daily allowance resets; a total allowance is shared across the whole validity period.
- Read the activation rule on the selected plan. Installation and the start of paid validity are not necessarily the same event.
- Compare the final checkout total in the same currency, for the same number of days and devices. Include any discount conditions and required extras.
- Save the installation instructions while you have reliable Wi-Fi. Keep your usual SIM’s data roaming off and select the travel eSIM for mobile data.
Speed and support are separate questions
A 4G or 5G label describes supported network technology, not a minimum download speed. Indoor signal, rural coverage, congestion and the device all affect the result. We have not run a controlled network test across these three services, so we do not rank their real-world speeds.
ESIM0 delivers installation details by email and makes the eSIM available in the account dashboard. For help choosing the correct package, use our contact page. Check each provider’s refund terms before installing or activating; a comparison article is not a substitute for those terms.
FAQ
Which Japan eSIM is cheapest?
Compare current final totals for identical data, validity and currency. We do not publish a lasting price ranking because package choices, exchange rates and promotions change.
Does reduced-speed data stop working after the daily allowance?
On the ESIM0 daily plans described here, data continues at the stated 1 Mbps reduced speed after the high-speed allowance. It is not an uninterrupted-speed guarantee; network availability still matters.
Can I use a fixed bundle over more days?
Only within its stated validity. Remaining data does not extend the expiry date. Choose a bundle whose validity covers the whole trip.
Can I keep my WhatsApp number?
You can keep using your existing WhatsApp account with a travel data connection. Do not register a new account merely because you installed an eSIM.
Do I need an app to install ESIM0?
The email contains installation instructions and a QR code. Read our activation guide and use the instructions for your device.
