A travel eSIM is a simple way to have mobile data in Turkey from the moment you land, without a shop visit. At the time of writing, esim0's Turkey plans connect to Türk Telekom and Vodafone, and they are data-only. On the IMEI rule: Turkey's telecom regulator, BTK, says that a phone brought from abroad can be used for 120 days from the date of entry without registration, so a normal holiday stays inside that period.

Which networks the eSIM uses in Turkey

At the time of writing (September 2026), the Turkey page lists two networks: Avea/Türk Telekom and Vodafone. It lists 5G as the fastest network type available. Signal and speed depend on your location, on your phone and on the network, and 5G is not available everywhere.

The network belongs to the plan, not to the country. For example, the Global plan lists Turkcell as its network in Turkey. Always check the network on the page you buy from.

Your data also leaves the supplier’s network from another country before it reaches the internet: at the time of writing, esim0’s Turkey plans show “Your connection appears from” the Netherlands or the United Kingdom, depending on the plan. In practice, apps and websites usually behave as they would on a connection in that country. Turkish law still applies to how you use your phone and any app while you are in Turkey, whichever country your data appears to come from.

The Turkey page offers two kinds of plan at the time of writing:

  • Fixed plans from 1 GB to 50 GB. Validity is 7, 15, 30 or 180 days. The 180-day option is a 50 GB plan.
  • Daily plans, where you choose the number of days. Each day has a high-speed allowance. After it is used, the speed is reduced until the next day. The reduced speed depends on the plan, for example 384 Kbps, 512 Kbps or 1 Mbps.

Prices change, so compare them on the Turkey page. A fixed plan suits you if you want one total amount for the whole trip. A daily plan suits you if your use is similar every day.

Turkey's IMEI registration rule: what the official sources say

Every phone has an IMEI, an electronic identity number for the device. On an iPhone, you can see it under Settings, General, About. BTK states that devices with an IMEI must be registered before they can be used on Turkey's mobile networks. For devices brought from abroad, BTK gives a period of 120 days from the date of entry. During this period the device can be used without registration. BTK also states that devices that are not registered within that period are cut off from communication.

What this means for a visitor with a travel eSIM:

  • The rule is about the device. BTK talks about devices that have an IMEI, and the IMEI is the identity number of the phone itself. Installing a travel eSIM does not register the phone.
  • Short trips: for a trip shorter than 120 days, the official sources give a registration-free period. You do not need to do anything for a normal holiday.
  • Long stays: the official pages we read do not say how the rule applies after 120 days to a phone that uses only a foreign SIM or a travel eSIM on roaming. If you plan to stay close to 120 days or longer, check the BTK and MCKS pages, or ask at a subscriber registration centre, before you rely on your phone.
  • Where registration happens: BTK's registration pages describe registration through e-Devlet (turkiye.gov.tr) and at subscriber registration centres.

This section describes the official sources as we read them in September 2026. The rules are set by the Turkish authorities and can change, so check the sources listed at the end of this guide.

Istanbul, the coast and longer trips

Istanbul lies on two continents, Europe and Asia. If your plans include both sides of the city, save each place you plan to visit and your return meeting point before you go out. Then you can still find your way if the signal is weak. The official guide GoTürkiye helps you plan the neighbourhoods. Use current transport information for the journey itself.

  • Arrival: write down the exact arrival airport and your transfer booking, not only "Istanbul". Turn on the eSIM for data as soon as you land, so you can contact your driver or check your route.
  • The coast and Cappadocia: for a trip beyond Istanbul, save each accommodation address. Check that the plan's validity covers your last travel day, including the day you fly home.
  • Long stays: the 180-day fixed plan suits a long stay. Keep the 120-day IMEI period in mind.
  • Other countries on the same trip: the Global plan covers Turkey and many other countries on one eSIM. Check the country list and the network for each country on the plan.

Set up before the flight

Install the eSIM at home, on Wi-Fi you trust. Then you do not need to look for airport Wi-Fi to open a QR code after you land.

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to an operator. Use the compatible devices list and your phone maker's guidance.
  2. Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email with a QR code within minutes of payment. It is also shown in your esim0 account.
  3. Check when validity starts. The activation rule can differ from plan to plan. Some plans start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Turkey. Others can start at installation. Check the rule shown on your plan and read how to activate your eSIM before you install. If you are not sure, ask support first.
  4. Open the QR code on another screen and scan it with your phone. Follow the guide for your phone: iPhone, Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel.
  5. Give the new line a label such as "Travel". Leave it switched on.
  6. Do not delete the eSIM after you install it. A QR code installs only once, and a removed profile cannot be installed again.
  7. When you land in Turkey, select the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line.
  8. Keep data roaming and automatic data switching off for your home SIM.

At the time of writing, the Turkey page says an unused eSIM stays valid for up to 180 days, so you can install well ahead of your trip. Check the activation rule shown on your own plan, since it can differ from plan to plan.

If the line shows signal but nothing loads, check three things in this order: mobile data is set to the eSIM, data roaming is on for the eSIM, and the plan still has data. Then turn airplane mode on and off once. The APN is set automatically.

Your own number, WhatsApp and bank codes

The eSIM is a second line. Your usual SIM stays in the phone with your number, and you choose which line carries mobile data. This has three practical results:

  • You keep your WhatsApp number. The app stays linked to your usual number, and the data comes from the eSIM.
  • SMS codes from your bank still go to your own number. Keep that line switched on.
  • Your home operator can still charge for calls and SMS on your number abroad. Check its prices before you travel.

On iPhone, Apple explains that only one number at a time uses cellular data. The option "Allow Cellular Data Switching" can move data to the other line during a call. Keep it off, so that data stays on the eSIM.

What the eSIM does not do

  • It has no phone number. It cannot make normal calls, and it cannot send or receive SMS. It does not give you a Turkish number.
  • Hotspot sharing depends on the network and on your phone, so it is not guaranteed. Contact support before you buy if you need it.
  • One eSIM works on one device. Install it on the phone you will travel with.
  • It does not register your phone's IMEI or change anything about the IMEI rule.
  • Refunds follow the refund policy: you must ask within 7 days of purchase. There is no refund once the eSIM is activated or used, or if the phone is not compatible.

Support is available 24/7 by email at [email protected], or through the contact page.

FAQ

Do I need to register my phone's IMEI for a holiday in Turkey?

For a normal holiday, no. BTK states that a device brought from abroad can be used for 120 days from the date of entry without registration. For stays close to or longer than 120 days, check the official BTK and MCKS pages before you travel.

Which network will my eSIM use in Turkey?

At the time of writing, the Turkey page lists Avea/Türk Telekom and Vodafone. The Global plan lists Turkcell in Turkey. The network is shown on each plan's page.

Can I get a Turkish phone number with this eSIM?

No. The esim0 eSIM is data-only. It has no number, no calls and no SMS. Messaging apps work over the data connection, and your own number stays active on your usual SIM.

When does the validity start?

It depends on the plan. Some Turkey plans start counting validity when the eSIM first connects to a network in Turkey, and others can start at installation. Check the rule shown on your plan and read how to activate your eSIM before you install. Either way, an unused eSIM stays valid for up to 180 days, so you can install well ahead of the flight.

Can I share the connection with my laptop?

It depends on the local network and on your phone, so it is not guaranteed on every plan. If you need it, contact support before you buy. A laptop also uses much more data than a phone.

What happens when my data runs out?

The plan stops. There is no extra bill. Plans with a fair-use limit slow down instead of stopping. You can buy another plan at any time, and a new eSIM does not remove the first one.
